In memory of

Jack C. Havens, age 92 of Helena

September 26, 1925 – March 27, 2018

Jack Calvin Havens, age 92, passed away on March 27, 2018. He was born to Bert Allen and Hazel Faye Havens on September 26, 1925, in Twin Falls, ID. He was surrounded by Dorothy, his loving wife of 65-years, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as he passed from natural causes. Jack considered Helena his hometown as he grew his family and his life.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen and served on Guam during World War II. He served four years and was honorably discharged.  Jack then worked and resided in various places, including Kansas City, Missouri, Fairbanks Alaska and Twin Falls Idaho, until he and Dorothy moved their family to Helena in 1957.  Jack then worked at the VA Hospital at Fort Harrison as a surgical technician for the next 30-years.

Prior to retiring he started a part-time lock shop business that grew into full-time after his retirement. Havens Lock and Safe was Jack’s passion and soon everyone in town recognized the “van”.  Jack was recognized for his professionalism and respect that he showed his customers, even at 2:00 a.m. when he was called out to un-lock a car.

Locksmithing was his professional passion, but… he loved watching his Oakland Raiders. Jack was a quiet man; however, his dry sense of humor and many jokes and stories will be missed.

Jack was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Mary Catholic Community since 1957; always trying to sit in the same pew. He was a Third Order Franciscan.

Family was very important to Jack and he is survived by his wife Dorothy; three children, Pamela, Debbie and Sam (Kathleen); seven grandchildren, Bobby (Sherry), Libby, Michelle, Melissa (KC), Joe (Jessica), Tyson and Nick (Jessica); and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Connie, his parents Bert and Faye; his in-laws Robert and Dorothy Crum, and his brothers Bert Jr. and Jim.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Big Sky Health Care and the staff of Compassus Hospice, specifically Stephanie for the care you provided Jack.

A Rosary, followed by an open sharing time will be 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Retz Funeral Home, 315 E. 6th Avenue. A Funeral Mass will be 12:10 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Community, 1700 Missoula Avenue. A luncheon reception will follow the service at the Church. Havens Family:

From his stories about growing up in the Great Depression to his love of circuses, Jack left an impression on me and anyone with whom he crossed paths. As Jack refused to buy them for fear he would waste money, I will never look at a green banana the same. All we can ask in our lives is that we make the world a better place. Jack Havens made the world just a little bit better.

    God bless Jack Havens,
    Foust Family
