Shirley Louise (Root) Horton died Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 unexpectedly in her home. Shirley was born in Butte, Montana on October 3rd, 1935 to James and Augusta Dodd. She was a long time resident of East Helena.
Shirley loved family gatherings and looked forward to each and every holiday dinner, which more times than not she cooked for the entire family and close friends. She was an avid golfer and loved the warm summers of Montana.
Shirley is survived by her children; Dan (Teresa Laughlin) Root of Big Sky, Mike (Mary) Root of Helena, Guy Root of Helena, and Leslie Root of Helena. Her grandchildren; Ruby (Craig) Leavitt of Denver, LeeAnna (Lamonte) Bell of Denver, Danielle Barney of Seattle, Melissa (Scott) Buckley of Helena, Kristi (Tailor) Nelson of Helena, Kyle Root of Bozeman, John Root of Denver and numerous great grandchildren. Shirley had wished to have her body gifted to the anatomical (WWAMI) program in Bozeman, Montana.
A service will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on 511 N. Park, Helena, Montana with a reception following in the basement. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Lung Association, 3919 Heritage Way, Missoula, MT 59802 or the American Cancer Society, 550 N 31st St, Ste 103, Billings, MT 59101 in Shirley’s name. I got to know Shirley when she was helping me with my cleaning business for a few years. She was a unique person, in fact her own person, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her. I send my sympathy and prayers to her family.
