Frederick (Fritz) Weed, 101
Lifelong Helena resident Frederick “Fritz” Weed died Sunday 22 January 2017 at the age of 101 at Touchmark on Saddle Drive.
Fritz was born on 9 December 1915 in Terry, Montana to Frederick Newton Weed and Josie Weed (née Bjelde). Upon graduating from Terry High School in 1933, the Weed family moved to Townsend, Montana where Fritz worked in the Broadwater County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. He later moved to Helena, married Viola Barker in 1938, and one year later started his family; Viola gave birth to Shari in 1939 and to Rick in 1944.
For a brief period Fritz worked in Seattle, Washington, then later in Bozeman, Montana, on war-related government construction projects. Fritz also served stateside in the United States Army for two years, following which he returned to Helena in 1946 and began a long, fruitful career at Helena Abstract.
Fritz and Viola prospered at Helena Abstract and eventually bought the business in 1957, which they owned until their retirement in 1977.
Fritz was also elected both to the boards of the First National Bank and Trust Company as well as the Shodair Children’s Hospital in 1971. He then served as President of the Montana Club in 1973 and as Potentate of the Algeria Shrine in 1983.
Fritz is preceded in death by his beloved wife Viola and his son-in-law Norman Gray. He is survived by his brother William Weed (and Marjorie) of Spokane, Washington; daughter Shari Gray of Helena, Montana; son Rick Weed (and Helen) of Portland, Oregon; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
