I always enjoyed Rich as a colleague and friend at the University of Great Falls. He had a sparkle in his eyes and abundant healthy curiosity about other places and people in the world. He supported ‘other thinkers’ to explore math in their own ways and to show their learnings in visual as well as mathematical and verbal methods and avenues of expression. I had art students who struggled significantly with mathematics their entire life; Rich showed them a way to understand through visual teaching and even allowed one especially challenged student to complete a series of paintings demonstrating the theories that he DID understand, just in his own unique way. Thank you, Rich. Your eyes, heart, and mind, are still sparkling for us. Much love to his best beloveds and extended family and friends. Thank you for being there for him.

I think of Rich often. He made me a better student. He challenged me in ways that grew my confidence. I “failed” math in 5th grade, which gave me the illusion that I couldn’t comprehend math. While I rebounded from that and managed to get decent grades through the rest of grade school and high school, it wasn’t until I enrolled in a Trig and Analytical Geometry class at the University of Great Falls that I realized – I was actually very capable of “math”. My confidence soared (even though I failed his first quiz). It made me try harder, think deeper. Today, I don’t use any of the math that I learned in those classes, but the analytical thinking – the ability to think deeper has stuck with me. Rich was also a classmate and friend of my older cousin John. I didn’t realize Rich had passed, I’m sorry for your loss – but I hope you see this Elaine, I’m one of many students that he inspired.
